DPE Challenge

Posted on 4th September 2009

Following intensive discussions the evaluation panel has decided not to award prices this year as none of the entries satisfied the requirements set out this year. In particular none of the entries satisfied the requirements for solid planning including cost estimations and analysis of generalization and scalability.

The evaluation panel found that, while candidates attempted to solve many of the challenges posed, and succeeded in partially solving several of them, no entrant was able to provide a strong and complete solution to any individual task. As the major focus of this year was to encourage in-depth treatment of the tasks laid out the panel has decided not to award any prices. The panel understands level of difficulty represented by the tasks is significant and requires significant effort and expertise to complete. A review of the tasks presented this year is planned to identify ways to allow and encourage participants to focus on a smaller set of tasks at a higher level of detail.

The evaluation panel was pleased to see among the entries that certain digital preservation procedures and tools seem to have established themselves, moving from ad-hoc experiments towards more established workflows. This is a clear indicator towards the growing professionalization of the community participating in the challenge.

We would like to thank all participants, and we are of course very happy to receive any feedback on the challenge, the tasks and difficulties encountered.
